There are lot of historic landmark and Santa Fe is known as a city of quality museums; with 10 major museums in town it is a well-deserved reputation. The Palace of the Governors building, now a Southwestern history museum, was constructed as a government building by the Spanish in 1610. It remains the nation's oldest public building still in continuous use. The Museum of Fine Arts, just west of the Plaza, displays an extensive permanent collection of primarily Southwestern artists, including major works by Georgia O'Keeffe The Museum of International Folk Art features ethnic crafts from many cultures; noted for its Hispanic heritage wing, it contains one of the largest collections of folk art in the world. The nearby Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is housed in a building based on a traditional hogan and houses contemporary and historic art and craft from all Native American cultures. El Rancho de las Golondrinas is a living museum that has preserved the Spanish Colonial and Territorial way of life on a 200 acre ranch just outside of Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Children's Museum offers education and entertainment for families with interactive programs and and exhibits. The Museum of Spanish Colonial Art: The many forms that make up Spanish Colonial art may not be familiar to most. But, to collectors and those who appreciate one of America's oldest folkart traditions, they are highly prized. On July 21, 2002 the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art opened its doors on one of the world's most significant collections of Spanish Colonial Art. Located in a converted historic home on 'Museum Hill' 2 miles from the downtown Santa Fe Plaza. The Museum of Fine Arts, just west of the Plaza, displays an extensive permanent collection of primarily Southwestern artists, including major works by Georgia O'Keeffe The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture showcases classic and contemporary Southwestern Indian paintings, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, basketry and weaving. Several of renowed artist Doug Coffin artwork are present here. The Institute of American Indian Art displays contemporary Native American art in all its forms and represents the largest collection of Indian artists in the country. The Santa Fe Children's Museum offers education and entertainment for families with interactive programs and and exhibits.
